Summary

I love Lisa Taddeo’s writing style, but so many things about this left me really confused and torn。 I don’t understand the intentions behind this book。 It reads like fiction yet although it goes to great lengths to ensure the reader knows it’s non-fiction, adds no commentary, insight or journalistic analysis of substance to warrant this。 I felt like the book confused female desire with trauma and mistreatment at multiple points。 I felt like it portrayed the central women as weak and without agen I love Lisa Taddeo’s writing style, but so many things about this left me really confused and torn。 I don’t understand the intentions behind this book。 It reads like fiction yet although it goes to great lengths to ensure the reader knows it’s non-fiction, adds no commentary, insight or journalistic analysis of substance to warrant this。 I felt like the book confused female desire with trauma and mistreatment at multiple points。 I felt like it portrayed the central women as weak and without agency。 The book left me really disappointed and confused about it’s purpose。 However I will read Taddeo’s fiction work because because her prose is beautiful and captivating。 。。。more

A female perspective on the desires of three women, it digs deeper than sex, to everything we need。 Gripping but disturbing more than sexy, maybe because it is true。

No offense to anyone who loved this book but - how can a book about sex be so unsexy? Honestly, this was described by many as a groundbreaking collection of stories on female desire but all it did was induce my desire to stop reading。I’ve since read in some reviews that this book was just marketed wrong and while it isn’t the feminist story about female empowerment that many originally said it was, it’s still a great story。 But my god it’s sooooo much less than that。 I’m inclined to say I hated it。 At least, it was the worst book I’ve read in a very long time。But let’s start at the beginning: the writing style。 I did not like it。 Not only do I hate second person POV but another pet peeve of mine is when authors don’t use quotation marks。 Boom, two things that annoyed me from the very start。 Thankfully, the passages told in second person POV are few in between so I could ignore them at most, but still。The language itself grossed me out severely。 I’m no prude, I’ve read books with explicit sex scenes and enjoyed them, but Lisa Taddeo does this thing a lot of authors do when writing about ~shocking sex: she uses gross descriptions。 I don’t want to read about stinking men and how dogs will smell female blood mixed with semen on a men’s penis。 It’s not sexy。 That’s not what female desire looks or feels like to me。 That just makes me feel nauseous and as if the woman describing the scene is uncomfortable and doesn’t want to have sex。 When I sleep with a man and enjoy it, I don’t think about how he stinks。 I get it when it’s about Maggie’s sex life because statutory rape is supposed to gross out the reader but Lina for example describes French kissing absolutely disgustingly。 The language Taddeo uses sparks the exact opposite of desire in me, and I can’t figure out if she does it to be edgy or special or unique or if this is really how she views sex?I also struggle to see a connection between all these stories。 I get that Taddeo interviewed several people and the stories don’t necessarily have to be connected but I couldn’t figure out what the point was。 Usually if you put several stories in one book, there is a reason why you choose these specific ones together and don’t publish them separately。 There should still be a common agenda and an objective。 And sure, all these women are bland, white and obsessed with sex and men to the point that nothing else in life besides it seems matter to them。 But there is no common moral of this story。 I get it’s a book about sex。 But the way the stories are told, it makes it seem as if those women have only one purpose in life: men。Also, what’s with all the Catholicism? I get that Americans are weirdly obsessed with religion, but why do all these women (except Sloane I think) preface their sexual actions with saying they are catholic? Is it so special and edgy to have a sex drive as an American catholic?Maggie: I guess this story could’ve been the book’s saving grace for me, because I thought it was truly sad and a great depiction of a creepy sexual abuser and his victim and how society reacts so fucking wrong in situations like these。 I think Taddeo did capture Maggie’s naivety and infatuation quite well。 Also, the end was creepy as hell。 But overall, I felt like there was something missing, it was a bit too superficial。Lina: A boring housewife who married a guy she doesn’t love。 Tell me more! She’s representative of millions of women probably (which does make me sad tbf) and while I do like that the typical marriage relationship dynamics are reversed here than what’s usually shown in the media (i。e。, she wants sex, her husband doesn’t), it just gives me nothing。 I couldn’t have been less interested in her if I tried。Sloane: Typical rich, white, privileged child。 Spice it up with some bulimia so that people will pity her and to make her more relatable and vulnerable。 Probably the least interesting of all the stories。Maybe these stories would’ve impressed me more if Taddeo had fleshed them out better, but it felt a bit like a superficial draft of a collection of short stories that wasn't really thought through。 I did not feel as if I was reading the result of ten years of research! Like I said, I couldn’t figure out the connection between all the stories, it felt as if Taddeo didn’t have enough ideas to make each story interesting on its own, so she just put them together to get enough pages in。 The characters stayed terribly bland and didn’t have much depth。 Although, I have to say the epilogue was done quite well and gave me a bit closure on the whole book。I powered through this book in a day because I had the time and I was afraid if I put it down, I would never pick it up again (and I hate leaving books unfinished)。 But yeah, it wasn’t worth it for me。 Maggie’s story and the epilogue were ok and there were some passages that were thought-provoking and had some nice quotes, but I don’t think I will read any of Taddeo’s other work in the near future。 。。。more

as a piece of non-fiction/reportage, this is totally mind-blowing。 the level of detail taddeo has collected is unreal and i'm blown away by the dedication and work here。 that is to say nothing of the titular group of women, all of whom i found deeply fascinating and interesting symbols of desire。 are they as relateable as the blurb or taddeo in the 'author's note' would like you to believe? no。 But, does that make them any less interesting? also, no。 (finally, yes, i have seen the criticism that as a piece of non-fiction/reportage, this is totally mind-blowing。 the level of detail taddeo has collected is unreal and i'm blown away by the dedication and work here。 that is to say nothing of the titular group of women, all of whom i found deeply fascinating and interesting symbols of desire。 are they as relateable as the blurb or taddeo in the 'author's note' would like you to believe? no。 But, does that make them any less interesting? also, no。 (finally, yes, i have seen the criticism that it is three white women and i totally understand that (though, it's my understanding that taddeo was working with women of colour too, but they, ultimately, didn't consent to their stories being told which is another question。) it would have been nice to explore the experience of women of colour and trans women alongside these three women, but, hopefully, that will be in a book someone will write someday。) 。。。more

Zero connections were made between the three women and/or the many other women Taddeo studied in the TEN YEARS she was researching the book。 And the book is supposed to be about their "desires" yet one of the women is an actual child, a teenager, when she "falls in love" with her thirty-something teacher (who is married with kids) and clearly this is abuse not an actual relationship, yet the author seems to paint the picture - even at the very end of the book - that this "relationship" is just as valid as the other ones in the book。 There is so little analysis about this abusive situation and the victim is given too much agency, as though she deserves fault for this situation (SHE DOES NOT。 HE PREYED ON HER)。 Another woman is happily married but engages in sexual relationships outside of her marriage, both with her husband included and without, and fine, this is interesting, totally consensual, very different from my life so okay I'll read about it。 BUT at the end, it starts to seem like she doesn't even like it, like she's doing it only because her husband wants her to, and that was so frustrating to me - this is supposed to be a book about HER desires but it's really not at all。 It's really about how she's submissive to her husband's desires, like at this point I still don't know what this woman even wants for herself。 The only one of the three stories that I felt was truly about sexual desire was the woman who was sexually unsatisfied with her husband so was engaging in an affair that was only about the sex, but even this one was so centered on what the men wanted - her husband wanted zero sex, her affair wanted only sex when it was convenient for him。 Neither of these guys cared at all about what this woman wanted, and she never seemed to have a thought that she deserved a partner who took her needs and wants into consideration。 It was just so depressing。I am so annoyed and frustrated with this reading experience because as I was reading the book, I really did find it compelling, and I see why it got such high praise。 But when you really dig in and think about it on a deeper level, it is just so disappointing and sad。 The women that Taddeo chose to feature, the way she talked about them, the way she analyzed exactly nothing about their situations, all of it was not good。 It just was not what I hoped it would be。 。。。more
